Forest People

Higher orangutan population expected in S’wak
By Zora Chan

By 2020, most primates can be found in Sarawak and Sabah, not Kalimantan

Galdikas said the main threats to orangutans and rainforest in Kalimantan included poaching, illegal logging, illegal mining, palm oil plantations and fires (forest fires to clear land for plantations).

But nothing compares to palm oil plantations because it is legal. The primary cause of orangutan habitat destruction in Kalimantan is palm oil plantations,” she said.

She pointed out that it was all right to go into palm oil plantations, as long as these were done under circumstances with the needs of the orangutan taken into consideration.

“Don’t clear the whole forests but leave bits of primary forests for the orangutans to use and survive. The bigger the forests, the better. - The Borneo Post (read more here)

Oh no! Imagine if the number of orang utans in Sarawak and Sabah exceed the Indonesia's, what will happens? The Indonesians will accuse us ''stealing'' their Orang Utans? Oh no, world war 3...!

But this is not about Indonesia vs Sarawak/Sabah, but read the bold words. Palm oil plantations. He he he. Still deny it, my dear leaders? Still campaigning for palm oil?

As for me, I don't mind if the orang utans are going to extinct one day, because, you know, our country has so many Orang Utan-like politicians. Nevermind, they can replace the real Orang Utan anyway :P
